Anatoly Karpov Chess Club

We formed our Club in 1998 at the Russian Centre in Colombo under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, ten times Women's National Chess Champion and the Chess Olympiad Gold Medalist.  The following are some of the few important events we have carried out in promoting Chess throughout the Island:

  • Conducted 250 Chess Coaching Camps throughout the country.
  • Arranged advanced Chess Coaching Camps with the help of Russian, Yugoslavian and Indian Grand Masters.
  • Organized Chess Tournaments such as Independence Trophy Team Chess Championship, New Millennium Women's Chess Championship, Over 50 age group Veteran Chess Tournament, All Island Age Group Chess Tournament etc.
  • Arranged an Arbiter's Seminar for school teachers and Sri Lanka Arbiters with the support of the Russian Chess Federation.
  • Sent some of Sri Lankan chess players to Moscow, Russia to participate in the under 12 School's competition.  These players had the opportunity of meeting the 6 times World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov.
  • We have sent our Chess players to India every year to participate in Age Group Chess Tournament and International Rating Tournaments. We are very proud to inform that our four players got the International Ratings during this period.
  • Distributed chess boards and chess books with the help of Sports Ministry and other sponsors.
  • Put up a chess centre in Paduma Gabbarama Temple with the help of Indian chess Grand Masters under the patronage of Peraliya Wimala Thero to help the chess players in tsunami effected area.  







Mercantile Chess Association

The Mercantile Chess Association was formed to promote chess among the Mercantile Sector by conducting coaching camps by organizing chess tournaments to upgrade the knowledge of the chess players in the Mercantile Sector.  

The Mercantile Chess Association was set up in late 1997 under the patronage of Union Assurance with it former CEO MR. Hyderly Rehmanjee appointed as the first Patron. In 1998, the MCA organized a Training camp for the Mercantile Sector at the University of Colombo, at which its 250 participants were awarded certificates.

In 1999, The Inaugural Mercantile Chess Tournament was conducted by the MCA among the 13 member companies as Individual and team events.

The Founder President of Mercantile Chess Association was Mr. Ramal Jasinghe is the current President of the Association. In 2000, Mr. Sarath Wickremanayake was appointed as the Patron and the current Patron is Mr. Rohan Senanayake.

As the General Secretary of the Mercantile Chess Association, Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, ten times Women’s National Chess Champion and the one and only Chess Olympiad Gold Medalist has taken a tremendous efforts to promote chess among the Mercantile Sector by conducting several chess coaching camps free of charge.

Once in two years period MCA conducted Open Mercantile Chess Tournament. Union Assurance, Asian Alliance Insurance, Lanka Orix Leasing Company and Seylan Merchant Bank sponsored the previous Chess Tournaments. Sampath Bank won three times consecutively the Open Team Chess Championship conducted by MCA. Ceylon Business Appliances company has agreed to conduct this year Mercantile Chess Championship.

Golden Square International Chess Association

Golden Square International Chess Association was formed in 2007, under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya, especially to help chess newcomers and produced “ Nawaka Obata Chess Danuma”and three Chess Puzzle books No.1, 2,and 3.

GSICA conducted Age Group Chess Tournament among the members and among the players in Western Province annually and distribute medals and certificate by arranging Grand Award Ceremonies.
