Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya (Born in June 18th , 1963 in Megoda Kolonnawa, Colombo District, Western Province) is a Sri Lankan and her father is Mr. Simon Singho Wijesuriya and Mother is Mrs. K.T. Rosalin.
Suneetha studied in Gathatuwa Maha Vidyalaya from Grade 1 to Grade 10. She sat for NCGE Examination in 1976 and got through and entered to Kudabuthgamuwa Sri Rajasinghe Maha Vidyalaya to do the Advanced Level in 1978.
She is the second in four children’s family. Her elder brother is Mr. Shelton Wijesuriya who is also a chess coach and younger brother is Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya, International Arbiter, Former National and open champion and Asian Gold Medalist and currently the General Secretary of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka. Her only sister, Vineetha Wijesuriya, Candidate Master, also a Former Women’s National Champion in Sri Lanka and now she is staying in Australia with her family.
Mrs. Suneetha married to Mr. Bandula Withanage (Born in June 10th, 1963 in Mulleriyawa New Town, Colombo, Western Province) is a Railway Security Officer in Sri Lanka Railway Department. Bandula is giving his maximum support towards the chess promotional work in Sri Lanka.
Her son (Born in July 07th 1988) is Mr. Nishantha Withanage and he is a Banking Officer of Sampath Bank PLC. Her daughter (born in 21st November 1990) is Miss. Chamika Madubashini Withanage. She is an Insurance Officer in Union Assurnace PLC.
How she started chess carrier
Only In1978, at the Rajasinghe Maha Vidyalaya she saw a 64 squared chess board with fascination wooden pieced and she was very enthusims to learn the game. She got to know who brought a chess board to the school to teach chess to the students. He is none other than a English Master Mr. W.A.D.De Zoysa who spent most of his time to teach not only English subject but also Chess, Mathemetical games in cards, Russian and German language etc.
Her Inaugural Tournament
Inter school chess team tournament in 1978.
First game in a Competition that she won and collected 3 out of 5 games.
First Individual Tournament
The Women’s National Chess Championship Tournament Started in Sri Lanka in 1979 and Suneetha participated in that and won the 1st Runners up.
After that she won the Women’s National chess championship in 1980/1982/1983/1984/1985/1986/1987/1988/1995 & 1997.
Won the Maya Chiburadanidge challeng Trophy chess Tournament conducted by the sovief cultural House Sri Lanka and won the Trophies in 1981, 1982 and 1983.
Suneetha was also the first woman to win the 30th World Chess Olympiad in Manila. She won the gold medal in 1992.
In addition to that she continued to play local tonaments and also represented Sri lanka many times internationally.
She reigned as the country's national champion throughout the 80s until 1997 when she decided it was time to switch roles to teaching.
